An Integrative Approach

Many people searching for courses, look at location, times and costs which are all practical and important factors. With so many counselling courses available, what does Integrative counselling mean as opposed to Person Centred, Humanistic, CBT or other one perspective approaches?

Integrative counsellor training provides a vast toolbox consisting of numerous techniques spanning several theoretical approaches. This understanding of several theories and schools of thought enables the seamless integration of skills into one cohesive package. This package being as unique as you are, ultimately becoming your way of working as opposed to ‘the’ way of working that single perspective courses offer.

With individuality being key, and our responses and needs being unique, this enables you to personalise, adapt and tailor your approach to each individual client in response to their goals and needs.

After all counselling is not a one size fits all reductionist process, our lives are complex and diverse with many often conflicting and contributary components to the difficulties we face.

The Main Theories We Teach

Psychodynamic

This enables counsellors to explore people’s pasts and how this impacts the present. From developmental stages and development of self to the defence mechanisms we deploy to block out psychological pain, Psychodynamic theory enables the exploration of deep-rooted causes. These undoubtedly impact on the difficulties we face in later life and the methods we use to block this from our awareness.

Person Centred

This approach focusses on the here and now, specifically the relationship between therapist and client. It provides key features and core elements to create a therapeutic relationship free from judgement.

CBT

Looking at the future and how to move past current behavioural cycles and thought processes. Identifying the lenses we view information through and how this can form beliefs about life events

Why An Integrative Approach?

These theories, combined, offer you the ability to work in the past, present or future, whatever your client needs to move forwards and lead a more fulfilling life. Its reparative approach provides you with the capability to work with many presenting problems and with experience, chronic and acute mental ill-health.

Having many tools in your toolbox empowers you to keep therapy moving and adapt your way of working to overcome inevitable obstacles that arise during counselling sessions.

Our courses are driven by personal development and self-awareness. These, along with theoretical learning, are the foundation stones of counsellor training, enabling effective application of theory into practice. This Integrative approach really enables you to drill down and identify the root cause of someone’s distress, whilst also providing you with the knowledge of what skills could be most effective for specific presenting problems, taking into account the personality of both counsellor and client.

This Integrative approach enables you to provide both short-term solution focussed and long-term in-depth therapy. Whilst providing variety to your practice, it broadens your client base. From those wanting a limited number of session or larger organisations such as Employee Assistance Providers (EAP) who provide a large quantity of referrals to counsellors to individuals wanting long-term in-depth therapy to identify and work with the root cause of the difficulties they are facing.
